FREE Memory Upgrade for EEE PC 1000HE when you buy from Accent Micro

Asus EEE PC 1000HE

There’s a gadget madness in Glorietta when I pass by yesterday. Several electronic retail stores participated including Electroworld, Silicon, Villman and Accent Micro.I happened to check out Accent Micro’s booth and asked about the 1005HA Seashell but they have no idea yet when it’s gonna arrive on their inventory.

Their best-selling netbook thus far is the Asus EEE PC 1000HE. They offer a FREE memory upgrade to 2GB when you purchase using your credit card. They sell the netbook at Php 22, 500 – 0% interest for 12 months. Still a bit pricey compared to some retailers who sell the same netbook at Php 19,700 cash-based.

The EEE PC 1000HE normally comes with 1GB of memory when you purchase and most of the times, you have to pay extra to avail an upgrade to 2GB. I purchased my Asus EEE PC 1000HE at the same store but they don’t offer the same promo yet. Well, no regrets.

Disney Netpal Netbook

Netpal is a netbook created by the power of Disney and Asus. The netbook is basically a re-branded older generation Eee PC, which provides children-oriented fun and learning at the same time. Netpal will not be available until August, but some lucky folks like Coolbeans have already got their hands on one of the demo units and run a short review.

To learn more about the Design, UI and Parental Control feature, head over to Coolbeans.

Disney and Asus have partnered to build a netbook that’s children oriented. It runs on Windows XP in the background and has a Disney customized software than runs on top. It’s basically a skin/theme that packs all the software intended for children. The software is complete with parental control so the children stay on the right path with their netbooks.

The netbook will retail at $350.

Korean Netbooks to increase more and more

Korean models playing with a netbook.

Digitimes reports that netbook manufacturers in Korea like Samsung and LG have recently increased netbook components significantly from Taiwan based component makers. On the other hand, component manufacturers are happy about this progress on netbook scene.

Samsung and LG are only two of the Korean netbook brands I know, and so far they play behind Asus, Acer, MSI and HP. It doesn’t mean that these brands bring poor performance, though. Samsung has by far gathered positive reviews and so as LG, though some brands are really cheaper on same specs. So it could all be about the pricing. With this latest move, I hope they could bring more cheaper netbooks without jeopardizing the performance, quality and power.

What do you most consider in buying a netbook?

A Third Party Battery

A Third Party Battery

Today’s leading netbooks pack almost the same specs under the hood across different brands. The Intel Atom N270 and N280 are the most commonly used CPU on netbooks today, partnered with 1GB RAM of different brands and 160GB HDD at 5400 RPM. Screen size is also now standard at 10″ @ 1024 X 600. Performance wise, each netbook doesn’t go very far ahead or behind one another as well. I came up with some factors that I feel buyers should more importantly consider when buying a netbook.

Glossy or Matte Display

This is totally a matter of personal preference. Whether the display is glossy or matte finish, they both have pros and cons we can debate on. But in terms of delivering better taste to my eyes, the matte finish is winning. With glossy display though, I find it better when watching movies in a well-lit room at the right screen angle.

Keyboard size and design

When it comes to keyboard, bigger is better. EEE PC 1000HE, HP 2140, Samsung NC10, and the new Toshiba NB205 have the most preferable keyboard today. My personal choice is the keyboard on 1000HE for I find my fingers more comfortable on it. Plus the island-chiclet design is just perfect. Though many users also prefer the HP 2140.

Overall Design

Overall design pertains to the physical look of the netbook including size, weight and color. This seems to be the least I would consider, but as much as possible, I want it simple. No too much decoration, not too colorful, and most importantly, the netbook should not look weird.

Price and Branding

Different brands, different prices. First time owners usually consider the price over the brand. Nothing wrong with it, they would probably have same performance given same specs. But to experienced users, brand is most considered. When loyalty is built, price is sometimes forgotten. When it comes to branding, the one with higher reputation, better warranty coverage and technical support service wins.

Battery Life

Of all the factors, the most important to me is how long a netbook could last in one charging. The latest and most loved so far by Laptop Mag is the new Toshiba NB205, which lasted 8.5 hrs of continued internet browsing thru WiFi. My EEE PC 1000HE could last up to 8 hrs, and it’s good enough for me.
