Like what we’ve been telling all the time, one of the things that separate netbooks from Desktops and Laptops is the ability to play or burn optical discs because it doesn’t include the optical drive. It was not included in a netbook package to simply lessen the weight and of course the cost. While most software we use are available for download and can be accessed directly from disk drive or flash drives, we might think we do not need an optical drive. Operating Systems are also now available and can easily be installed via creating Live USB flash drives.
But here’s one of the things I could not do without an external optical drive. I occasionally create and edit personal videos on my netbook using Windows Movie Maker and I can’t transfer it to optical discs easily. I’ve been looking for cheap optical drives but have not considered buying one yet. So I looked around and found some cheap ones at
Amerimax going at under $60. Of course there might still be some cheaper ones around and I’m giving it few more months before I buy one. Amerimax also has
cheap laptop power supply cable if you’re looking for one. But I don’t guarantee you will find what you need there. You may give it a look though, and see something else you might be interested of buying.

HP introduced the Mini 5101 which comes in suit and tie. It packs an Intel Atom N280, 2GB RAM and a choice between SSD and HDD. HP also offers the netbook with 10.1″ screen at 1024 x 600 resolution, and you may add a few bucks more to get a higher resolution 1366 x 768.
Yugatech is reporting that HP Mini 5101 is now selling in the Philippines via Asianic computer store for Php 23.995. The listed spec includes 1024 x 576 display and not the higher choices, but I’d take it with grains of salt.

Laptop ‘89 casts the future Laptops, Ultraportables and Storage devices of the past. They featured some known brands like NEC, Atari, Dynabook, IBM and Mac Portables among others.
I don’t have any proof or evidence to support how legit the video is, but I was entertained and amazed to say the least. Some of the concepts today like the touchscreen, detachable screen, docking stations and luggable laptops were also featured on the show.

Asus EEE PC 1001HA Seashell
Asus called their netbooks with slimmer design “seashell”, simply because of the clamshell design that resembles a seashell; thicker from behind and gets thinner in front. So far they have released the 1008HA and 1005HA.
Recently, another seashell model of EEE PC was found along the shore and it just doesn’t looks like seashell but feels like it as well. It’s the 1001HA, and it has wavy design on the lid that creates a texture of a real seashell. The new netbook was first found from some European retailers. The netbook is said to look the same as the 1005HA with 1GB RAM, 160GB. Only it has a slower Intel Atom 270 compared to 1005HA’s N280. And reportedly, this new model will have 3 OS options. There’s no much info I have about this new specie apart from the following specs:
Processor: Intel Atom N270
Chipset: Intel 945GSE + ICH7M
Memory: 1GB DDR2
Hard drive: 160GB
Display: 10.1

Smart Bro is a Wireless Broadband service under
Smart Communications. Today, they launched an exclusive event for students among rival Universities and Colleges in
University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA – Philippines)
The event was full of fun and surprises for students. There were games, netbook sales, rides and entertainment for everyone. There were 4 netbooks raffled off for the students. A Dell Mini Inspiron, Acer Aspire One, HP Mini 110, and Toshiba NBxx. I wasn’t very sure though about those netbooks, since the host of the show wasn’t able to describe it pretty well. There’s the comment so please leave your message.
The best thing about the event is that thousands of students were able to get FREE, yes, absolutely FREE Smart Bro Plug-it. It’s a 3G dongle that let’s you connect to the internet wherever you go. It comes with a SIM card with FREE 1.5 hrs surfing.
Another best thing about this FREE Plug-it is that you don’t just get them like normal 3G dongles on sale. They are limited editions dongles skinned with participated School Colors.
