Having a tablet PC is cool, that convertible touch screen will for sure enhance your experience with the computer, espcially if you use it in tablet mode. Surfing with only one finger, watching movies, playing games, all these are a lot more cooler and more intuitive when you have a touch-display.

The problem with these devices was for the last year the price, one hardly tangible for normal mortals. But this had changed lately, as device is like to call “tablet netbooks” entered the market. Shortly, these are computers merging the benefits of a netbook (light, portable, compact, affordable) with those of a convertible touchscreen. One of the first and most popular such devices is the Asus EEE PC T91MT .

Asus EEE PC 1001P - capable mini laptop for good money

Pros

good looking and sturdy built
the case and palm-rest area are no longer glossy, but made of a textured plastic, which feels quite OK and is smudges and fingerprints-proof.
hardware and features are standard for a 10 Inch netbook these days
display is matte too, so you can easily use it around
battery life is up to 11 hours on paper and more like 7-8 in daily usage, which is more than enough
it is available in a couple of different configurations (see details below) and in many color options (white, black, pink, etc)
price is very good what it has to offer

Cons

keyboard is only a standard flat one, and although quite comfortable, I prefer the chiclet styled ones
trackpad is not so responsive and only has a single click button
standard version gets only 160 GB storage and no Bluetooth
you only get Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g wireless and no fast Wi-Fi N (speed differences are not that big though)

Conclusions

As you can see, this device has nearly everything you’ll ever need. The hardware can run your daily applications fairly well, just don’t expect it to be able to face HD content, HD flash clips or games.

The good part is that this device is meant to be a travel companion: the smudge-free case, the screen you can use in strong light conditions, the big battery and the light weight are a proof that. It does has its lacks and you can get better 10 inch mini laptops on the market (not by much though), but if you’re on a tight budget, this is the one for you.

Because overall the Asus EEE PC 1001P is a great deal for the money you have to pay for it. And the fact that is one of the most popular such devices on the market is a proof of that, as well as the very good marks and reviews from regular buyers, posted all over the web.

Jolicloud Uncovers Multi-touch features of Eee PC 701

Jolicloud is an operating system specially designed for netbooks. It is a lite OS based on Linux, though I’m not sure if it’s Ubuntu but it’s very much similar. It also features a netbook remix UI. I got an invitation to try the new Jolicloud Alpha release for developers a week ago, and today I installed it to a thumb drive and had a test run on my Eee PC 701.

Now, we pretty much know that the Asus Eee PC 701 doesn’t support multi-touch feature. The multi-touch feature was actually introduced during the days of the Eee PC 900 series. But it’s one thing I discovered today. Two-finger scrolling and 3-finger touch right click works on Eee PC 701 when using Jolicloud. Though it’s kind of hard to do the 3-finger right click because the touchpad of the Eee PC 701 is really small to do the trick. But I swear, it works. I also tried the zooming in and out feature but it’s not working. The mouse settings don’t provide other features aside from the usual basic configurations. This is really new to me so please forgive if I’m too much amused of it. I uploaded a crappy video on Youtube and it’s also available after the break.

Is it ok to leave your netbooks plugged all the time?

My Asus EEE PC 1000HE has been plugged and busy for 3 straight days already. I’m using it the whole day and I leave it downloading copies of Live Linux distros all night. Of course I did a couple of restarts as well as required by application updates. But I noticed it did not heat up too much. My netbook is at the living room, no AC, atmosphere is ranging from 28 to 30 degress centigrade during daytime.

I wonder before if keeping it plugged the whole time affects on the temperature, but I guess, maybe just a little bit. I think most of the heat comes from internal components and maybe from the battery. Even though, I still ask, “Is it ok to leave netbooks plugged all the time”? “Is it good for the battery as well”?

I have an EEE PC 701 I purchased in 2007 and I’ve been using it the same way. Plugged at all time as much as possible. Of course it heats up much more than 1000HE because they have different components and the newer one has the advantage most of the times if not always. I did a basic battery check on my EEE PC 701 yesterday and it seems it’s as healthy as before. Maybe because I have lesser charge/discharge cycle? I’m not so sure. I’m not technically literate of how battery works. I did not do a battery test before, but I remember I watched 2 movies in one sitting so I did the same again and it’s almost the same result. It’s not accurate but I don’t think the result is far apart. I know my netbook pretty well but I don’t mean I can’t be wrong.

Asus Phasing out 7″ Netbooks, 8.9 inch not yet

Asus started their EEE PC line with an overwhelming welcome to 7 inchers. Later they come up with larger screens of 8.9 – 15″ including the Nettops. Now we have to admit that the first-gen EEE PC we loved will soon say its goodbyes. Asus will focus more on their larger netbooks and seems to phase out 8.9″ as well. Though not confirmed. I’m sure it’s all about business decision and we are well aware that 7″ nowadays are left behind mostly as compared to netbooks with larger screens. This decision is wise, and has a better chance of increasing sales on their other products as well.

8.9 inch SSD Netbooks Price Drops

As part of inventory sales, netbook makers are dropping the prices for their 8.9 netbooks and apparently for smaller sizes ssd-based. Looks like HDD is getting more practical on netbooks since it has larger storage capacity in lesser costs. SSD as we all know has lesser capacity but the prices are very high considering the estate. Now the only advantage we could see for SSD is the ability to r/w faster than HDD (not all times), and avoid breaking itself with major shocks.

In Taiwan, Acer has dropped their price for the 8GB 8.9 inch Aspire One to NT$6999 ($202 USD), while AsusTek puts a tag price of as low as NT$6500 ($187 USD) for their 7″ netbooks and NT$8999 ($260 USD) on 20GB 8.9″ netbooks.

The newest tablet hack on Eee PC

For those who can’t afford to replace their frist-gen EEE PC like me, don’t feel bad about it because that thing is the one which changed computing history. However, sometimes we can’t help but feel that we’re get used to it and want something more. A member of Mobile01forums has made his own tablet hack to his Eee PC 701 and it sounds the best tablet hack thus far.

According to the developer, he’s thinking of selling kits to everyone. I honestly would consider it. It’s cool. Well, I’d love it more to have a new netbook.

Vaio P is not a netbook – Sony.

If you look at the Sony Vaio P from afar, you’ll hardly notice its difference from netbooks because of its shape and size. But according to Sony blog, “You Can’t Tell a Netbook by its Cover”.

Sony still continues to claim that their Vaio P is not a netbook, maybe because they think that netbooks like Asus Eee, MSI Wind, Acer Aspire One, Dell Mini, etc. are made with lower quality than their product. This may be true, but their reasoning just describes the Vaio P even closer to what they are trying to deny. They were claiming that they are of greater advantage when it comes to keyboard, backlit screen, CPU, wireless capabilities, GPS, Dual OS, and storage options. Now let’s see what’s Engadget’s thought about it.

The conclusion, Sony Vaio P is really not a netbook because of its very expensive price.

I don’t have nothing against Sony, I just want them to accept the fact that netbooks are just as useful as the P.

Eee Storage Service for Eee PC 701 series now available

I happened to pass by the Eee PC comparison site and noticed that there’s already a 10GB Eee Storage availble for Eee PC 701SD/701SDX. Don’t know how long this has been available but the Eee Storage Utility has been on the support site for months already. The service is still unavailable for Eee PC 4G though, and I’m trying to get some words from the engineers about this.

Some models already come along with the Eeestorage installed, but if your Eee PC doesn’t have it yet, you can easily download and install it. For more details about installation and configuration, you may refer to eeestorage.com.

UPDATE: The Support Team replied pretty quickly and there’s hope for 4G users. “We are still developing the Eee Storage vision that works on the 4G model. Thanks for your supporting and patience. -Eee Storage Support Team”

7 and 8.9 inchers EEE PC will still exist

It turned out that the news we have posted previously are just ~~rumor~~ misquoted words, and Asus was a little shocked by it, got up and confirmed it’s not true. ZDnet interviewed an Asus spokesperson and according to the interview, there will still be 7 and 8.9 incher Eee PC’s. And the refresh on specifications for the sub-10 inches netbooks are also being considered.

Now that we know the truth, we can’t have a 10in netbook at $200 anymore. Not unless there’s a 50% cut-off.
