Asus EEE PC 1018P – astonishing and classy 10 inch netbook

If you want a business mini laptop with amazing looks and good features, you will usually not look for one in the netbooks segment. Still, if you need it to be as compact as possible and don’t want to pay thousands of dollars on it, you’ll surely love the Asus EEE PC 1018P.

When it was first spotted at CeBIT in March, i considered it  by far the most beautiful Asus netbook ever to be made, if not the best of them all. I still do, although it now faces some competition in my mind from the bigger Asus EEE PC 1218. Still, this one is definitely impressive in terms of design, aspect and build quality.

Brushed aluminum was used for the exterior and interior casing and the gadget will be available in black and silver. Having such a cover allows it to be rigid and reliable, while looking good and not catching smudges and scratches easily. Thus, the 1018P is a netbook for the long run. You can spot how it looks from the pictures below.

You’ll also notice how slim it is, measuring only 18 mm (0.8 inches). We don’t know how much will it weight yet, but expect it to be pretty light, hopefully around the 2.4 pounds mark or below. In order to get such a compact profile, battery life had to be sacrificed and the 1018P will probably only come with a 4-Cell 44Wh battery, enough for around 5-6 hours of life. Good, but could be better for sure.

We don’t know anything sure on the specs and hardware the 1018P will boost. Rumors announce N455/N475 processors with DDR3 support, 2GB of memory and up to 500 GB storage space, but these have yet to be official confirmed. Still, from the same pictures on this page, you’ll notice some nice features:

  • the device comes with a chiclet keyboard and a big trackpad with a single click button and a scrolling area on the right (I love this particular feature)
  • it will offer USB 3.0 ports, as anticipated by the BLUE ports on the side
  • Bluetooth 3.0 is also rumored to be present on-board, next to wireless Wi-Fi N (not sure about 3G/HSPA though, but it would surely do great on such a business mini-laptop)
  • there’s a fingerprint reader on the right, something we haven’t seen on netbooks before
  • it will come with Web-cam, card-reader, VGA output and 3 USB ports, but no HDMI (so will use low-powered ATOM platforms)

Like you might have understood until now, the Asus EEE PC 1018p is not yet available on the market. In fact, Asus hasn’t even officially launched it. Thus, we know nothing for sure on availability and prices, although expect it to run for $600 once it reached the states, if not more.

So stay tuned for more info on the Asus 1018P. This is a netbook I for one am going to keep my eyes on and you should too, as we don’t see devices like this one everyday. And the best way to do this is to subscribe to this site.

Andrew, Has this model hit the market yet?
Few sites are selling 1018PB and claiming it to be a 1018P!
Online buyers are going to be confused with what they see in review pages and what would end up at their door step. Puff!
