Asus EEE PC 1001PX – cheap netbook dressed in carbon fiber
If you want a new 10 inch netbook built on the PineTrail hardware, the Asus EEE PC 1001PX is your cheapest available option right now, as it only costs $279.
For this kind of money you get a device similar to the ones in the Asus 1001P line, but with a couple of features cut off in order to drop the price. The hardware platform is standard: N450 1.66 GHz processor + GMA 3150 graphics + 1 GB of memory + 160 GB storage space. Many other things are the same, including the poor connectivity (only Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and no Bluetooth), the flat-keyboard + multi-touch trackpad and the matte carbon-like finish, plus matte display.
However, the 1001PX will only come with a 3-Cell 22 Wh battery, which cuts battery life to up to 5 hours only (and probably less in practice). Also, you get Windows XP OS instead of Windows 7 Starter as operating system, which might make the overall system slightly snappier, but it is after-all a 9 years old OS with lots of vulnerabilities.
The good part is that having the smaller battery allows this netbook to only weigh 2.45 pounds, which is 0.3 pounds lighter than the 1001P. Still, you will barely see the difference in practice.

Asus EEE PC 1001PX - cheap, but with a couple of significant lacks
With this configuration, the Asus 1001PX will be available in the US for $279. That’s 20 bucks cheaper than the standard 1001P (in fact only 10, as the 1001P already has some slight discounts). So, is saving 10 bucks worth having the smaller battery? No! I could live with Windows XP, but definitely not without autonomy.
Thus, although the 1001PX is perhaps the cheapest new 10 inch netbook you could get these days, I would still add a couple of bucks and go for the standard EEE PC 1001P.
