Asus Eee PC 1000HE has flaws apparently

asus eee pc 1000he

The Asus Eee PC 1000HE is the upgrade version of the 1000H. It receives a rather positive reviews from reputable laptop reviewers like Laptop Magazine, but of course there are flaws that are hidden somewhere and someone is trying to uncover it.

I find this article from Ezine Articles, and let’s try to analyze it.

  • Battery is ’so heavy’ that it causes uneven distribution on weight throughout the netbook.
The Eee PC comes with a 6-cell battery that provides up to 9.5 hrs battery life per charge. Heavier weight is given here, so his point only counts for uneven weight distribution. I wonder how you carry your netbook that you will notice the weight on the other side is heavier than the other side. If you put it on your lap, would you feel that right leg has heavier load than the left from a 3.2 lbs netbook? If it’s in your bag or on your desk, you would also definitely notice its weight. Unless the netbook can’t stand properly on its own because of the imbalanced weight.
  • Eee PC 1000HE looks fat, lacks the sleek and elegant design
Although this is not a big flaw, I would agree that the Eee PC 1000HE looks bulkier than other netbooks. But it still looks like a netbook nonetheless. It doesn’t look as bulky as a full-sized laptop, which by the way, I still see a lot of people manage to carry those laptops. Though the new design of the Eee PC 1000HE is actually slimmer than previous designs, it still doesn’t make everyone happy. The most special about this new design is the easy access to RAM and Hard drive for upgrade purposes. And that’s what’s important.
  • The Asus Eee PC 1000HE 10-inch netbook does not ship with an anti-virus.
Although there’s a lot of available FREE anti-virus software available for download, I think Asus must have provided a default one for their netbooks. I’m not sure if 1000HE is only the case. I don’t have ample knowledge on how the company negotiate for third party software, but it would be good if they can pull one anti-virus out for future netbooks.
  • Customer support for Eee PC 1000HE
I haven’t personally tried to call the Asus Support but I would agree about what the author says. Not in my life I have spoken to a first line customer support of any product or service that they fixed my problem right away. So I already got used to this sense. But it is still important to have highly trained customer support, right?

But despite the said ‘flaws’, which I don’t exactly consider as flaws, the Asus Eee PC 1000HE is still the one I most preferred to buy soon. Unless there’s already a new one out that is cheaper and more powerful.

I have called Asus Support. They answered almost immediately and resolved my problem quickly – I had to send my 900HA in to have the keyboard replaced. When weather delayed the return shipment they were more than willing to help me track the package – but they said they would have to call me back once the information was available (the next morning). The amazing part is that they DID call me back, exactly when they said they would!

I recently purchased a 1000HE and I had to chuckle when I read this article! While I have to admit that this machine may be a little on the hefty/fat side compared with some netbooks the battery life more than makes up for it. As an added bonus I will avoid muscle atrophy that may have resulted from buying a 3 or 4 cell battery machine!

Not shipping with an antivirus is a plus not a negative! I was worried about having to remove a bloated trial antivirus install that would always leave a residue. In fact, the Windows install is refreshingly free of bloatware and I was able to install the antivirus product that I prefer, Avast.

I admit that Asus support has a bad name. So do a lot of companies these days.

The biggest negative is that the system has Windows XP installed instead of Ubuntu, but they thoughtfully provided that huge empty second partition and that negative was quickly resolved!

@Rick, I’m about to get my 1000HE maybe tomorrow. I knew those “negativities” were not a big deal. Thanks for your inputs.

I was looking for a new laptop, I wanted in this order,
    1. Long battery life
    2. Non-reflective screen
    3. small enough to fit in my jacket, I usually ride motorbikes

With that said, any standard machine would do, my home built desktop is for performance, I just wanted a computer I could easily carry about.

This fitted the bill, performance-wise it is slightly quicker than my old 1.73 Ghz laptop, probably beacause it’s running XP instead of Vista. It reports itself as having a 1.66 Ghz chip. This will just about run World of Warcraft.

Battery life is awesome, no need to carry the power cord with me (old laptop lasted 20 mins)I dont have power saving options turned on.

The webcam is better than my logitech notebook cam that runs on my desktop which is also supposed to be a 1.3 cam.

Yes it is a bit chunky, but it gives me the impression the hinge will last a bit longer than most of the other machines out there.

I dont like the shiny case (fingerprints everywhere), but that doesnt really count in the grand scheme of things.

I thought the keyboard was a bit cheap & nasty. But all the buttons fall into the right place for my fingers. I HAVE had to have the keyboard replaced after only 4 months of use, keys started failing, but in its defence, it was a SHOP DEMO machine, so had probably already been battered by the time I got it. The keyboard was replaced & returned within 2 weeks although they gave themselves 3 weeks to do it.

Thats the only 2 complaints I have about it. Basically I am very pleased with this machine, glad I bought it.

I wasnt expecting bluetooth on it, that was a nice surprise.

It has the “N” standard for wifi, again very nice, I was only expecting “G”. I can pick up loads of signals where my old laptop detected nothing. I can now use this in my garden. I live in a 900 yo mansion house with 3′ thick lead lined stone walls which a signal is going to struggle to get through.

9/10. It only gets a 9 because I wont give a 10 to anything, to get a 10 it needs the performance of my home desktop, which aint going to happen.
