LG Netbooks will sport Sony Ericsson HSPA for greater mobile experience

While Asus is embedding HSUPA on Eee PC 901, LG is also taking its step on this kind of high speed broadband to provide users with greater mobility.

“Sony Ericsson is excited to work with LG Electronics to give consumers and business users the freedom and flexibility to access internet in the way they want it, wherever they are. Ericsson is also very pleased to be selected to provide mobile broadband modules to LG Electronics’ netbooks which is a segment that is forecasted to grow fast.” – Mats Norin, Vice President

Now let’s ask a not-too-related question, “When is the best time to buy Netbooks“.

There are stores like amazon, offering rebates on Eee PC and MSI, but you may think those netbooks are not the ones you need or want. And you may also be thinking twice of buying just yet because you are expecting more rebates to come in the near future. Or you are waiting for a Netbook with greater features like HSPA. Btw, HSPA enables you to have DSL-like internet access in a wireless way.

But we may be wrong. Prices may go higher instead of going down. Or the ones with HSPA capability might be priced too high which you cannot afford to buy. So what could be the best answer to the question?

Astone builds their Nettop, Astone Enforcer

As most of us aren’t aware, Astone has been building a Nettop PC discretely. According to Yugatech, this could be the first sub-10K Nettop PC, bundled with a CRT monitor. The revealed specs is missing Wireless LAN and CD/DVD drive.

  • Intel Atom 1.6GHz
  • Intel BLK945GCLF
  • NCP 1GB DDR2 RAM 667MHz
  • 80GB SeaGate HDD
  • 5.1 audio
  • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
  • 4 USB 2.0 ports
  • DVI/D, VGA ports
  • 15-inch CRT monitor

This looks pretty affordable at Php 9,999 despite the lack of CD/DVD drive and Wireless LAN. There’s also an upgrade option for a 16″ LCD, which will cost Php 3,000 more.

Asking for more battery juice?

Go ahead! You want it, then go get yourself one. Deal Extreme is selling this 10400 mAh battery and ships it free worldwide. And while you plan to have one, you may also want to consider finding a good heat sink absorber so you won’t sore your butt because this thing lasts forever. Of course I’m exaggerating. But seriously, it can last few hours longer than what you usually spend. Yeah, you can always rest whenever you want.

Ubuntu Mobile Tried on Eee PC 1000H

When Canonical came out with Ubuntu Mobile early this year, we were so excited to try it, but we just ended up imagining how it will look on the Eee PC.

Apparently, there has been lots of changes and updates that happened along the way, and what we had imagined seems to be untrue. Brad proved that Ubuntu Mobile does not have the same UI as pictured above, instead it implements classic style menu navigation pictured below.

The Ubuntu Mobile basically runs on the Eee PC but Brad said that WiFi don’t work yet as of the moment. Let’s wait for few months more and see how the development goes. Brad has all the details he gathered on his blog including everything you need to install it, so check out.

Re-Branding Ubuntu Eee

new ubuntu eee

For those who don’t know, our beloved Ubuntu Eee Project being led by Jon Ramvi is a completely third party project which is not affiliated to Ubuntu of Canonical in any way. Although, Ubuntu Eee shares blood with Ubuntu.

That being said, Canonical released a letter to Jon Ramvi expressing their concerns about some Trademark / Branding issue that Ubuntu Eee allegedly breached. Canonical just did the right thing to preserve their rights on their registrations and I never heard of any harsh brought by Ubuntu Eee to their name as well. In fact I’d say Ubuntu is just popular which became more popular when Ubuntu Eee arrived on the scene.

Now Jon is looking for alternative names to re-brand our beloved Ubuntu Eee and keep it apart from its root which is Ubuntu. Based on the issued letter, we cannot use the circle of friends logo and the word “ubuntu” or “buntu”.

There were already several good names thrown out by supporters for the new brand name, and I’m also thinking of suggestions so at least I tried to contribute. Here are my suggestions so far:

Netbuntu or Netbook OS – since Ubuntu Eee is currently being pimped to work on other netbooks as well.
Gold OS – since it’s currently gold.

Please contribute as well and you just might be able to get a copy of Ubuntu Eee on SD.

Again, I’d like to say this all the time, Thank you very much Ubuntu Eee, Jon and team.
